The 7th MaMa Conferenceย (Mothers and Midwives Alliance)ย was held on the 28th and 28th April 2017, in Ayr Scotland – and was another ROARing success! Being part of the event gave me a massive boost of positivity, and I hope I shared that with others too. It’s always a huge privilege being part of a network of like-minded birth workers and activist, who are all working to a common goal – positive, safe and respectful birth for all women, babies and families. ย The speakers were outstanding, midwives, obstetricians, doulas, and others interested in maternity care. And then there’s the fun! Looking after delegates is part of the philosophy of the conference, there’s something for everyone, so that attendees leave feeling refreshed and happy, and ready to take on the world. The awards ceremony meant that during the fabulous dinner dance and Ceilidh, the achievements of individuals were celebrated in style! Congratulations to all those nominated, those shortlisted, and to the winners – you are all stars.
Dear Sheena
Very well written and want to congratulate all of you for doing wonderful job and midwives really do a great job.
I am glad you all had great fun. Happiness is the secret of success. As you know Wigan has been very successful because of our Mantra Happy staff – happy patients.
As you know CQC has criticised maternity services in many Trusts and I know many are working to improve the maternity service. Some of you are even helping India and other countries to make maternity service safe and the whole experience of mothers great. You already know my passion for patient safety, maternity services and more so birth asphyxia.
Hopefully one day I will be invited to this conference (I know you did invite me ones and I could not make it) . We got to make maternity service safe and the best. We can only do it if we remove culture of bullying, harassment, create good teams and good governance and excellent staff and patient engagement.
Many of us are doing some fantastic work but unless we share and work together, we will not make NHS safer or better. It is good #Leadership good governance which is sadly missing in many Trusts and many maternity units.
One has to read GMC trainees survey to see how common bullying in maternity! Please note I am not blaming midwives but culture of bullying must be addressed and that is our role as leaders of NHS and as someone so passionate about maternity services.
Thank you Umesh for your thoughtful words. We have lots to learn, and we’re trying hard. Your advice is much appreciated – Sheena ๐
