Sheena & Anna
We are mother and daughter, sharing the same wonderful profession: midwifery. The passion we have leads us to grab any opportunity to talk of our work, over coffee, during walks with the children and grandkids, or pretty much whenever we can. Sometimes we see the cues to curb our chatter; the odd eye roll from family members who have heard so much, they feel qualified to catch a baby.
Our experiences as midwives are decades apart.
We trained and worked in different times, with different opportunities and pressures.
I have seen the gap between the normal, physiological birth rate widen, and have witnessed the consequences of this from many perspectives.
After a full and successful midwifery career encompassing all areas of clinical practice management, I took early retirement from the NHS whilst working as head of midwifery in the north of England.
As a practising midwife I worked in caseload, continuity models of care, working across all areas of clinical practice. Before commencing my current role as a midwifery lecturer I worked as a infant feeding lead in the community and hospital. This role prompted my interest in research and I have almost finished my PhD exploring the impact of the Baby Friendly Initiative, with the Maternal and Infant Nutrition and Nurture Unit at UCLAN. I am also the Editor-in-Chief of The Practising Midwife journal

To be kind – it covers everything, to my mind.
If you’re kind that’s it.”
